Sorry just isn’t Enough. Businesses Must Do Better When It Comes To People’s Data

Sorry just isn’t Enough. Businesses Must Do Better When It Comes To People’s Data

The Internet Society is disappointed, but not surprised, at the news of the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica revelations. This incident is simply the natural outcome of today’s data driven economy that puts businesses and others first, not users. Mark Zuckerberg’s apology is a first step, but it’s not enough. The seriousness of the revelations call for more than mere apologies. Change is needed. Society needs higher standards for transparency and ethics when it comes to the handling of our information. Anyone who collects data must be accountable to their users and to society. As we have seen this week, data abuse and mishandling can have grave consequences for both individuals and society. The Internet Society is deeply committed to an Internet that is trusted by its users. In a connected world, everyone is affected by everybody else’s actions. Incidents like this contribute to an overall climate of declining trust in the Internet and threaten its economic value. Businesses must do better.

Zasvojenost z internetom sta naprej klinično definirala  ameriška raziskovalca  Young in Case že leta 1998, kot nov medicinskih problem in novo diagnozo.

Decembra ob  16:30. Vljudno vabljeni.

ISOC has  published a statement expressing the  concern about measures
taken in Spain to block access to certain websites and, perhaps more
concerning, to require a top-level domain (TLD) operator to engage in
content monitoring and blocking.
This is a tense time politically in Spain with an independence
referendum having been called for October 1 in the Catalonia region
which the central Spanish government views as illegal. We do not want to
get involved in the politics of the situation, but are concerned by the
manner in which the Internet is being restricted. As we have repeatedly
stated, we do not see Internet blocking / shut downs as effective
measures and believe they cause far more collateral damage to the
economy and society.

The Internet Changes Everything

At the Internet Society, we believe that the internet has the power to change lives. That’s why we’ve launched the Beyond the Net Funding Programme, giving everyone the chance to make a positive difference and join us in our mission to provide open, secure internet access for all.

Our Beyond the Net Funding Programme gives Internet Society members the opportunity to contribute at a local or regional level through an Internet Society Chapter. We support bright ideas that work in partnership with local organisations to empower people around the world.

How Beyond the Net funding works

We first started funding community Internet projects back in 2005, and we’ve supported over 180 projects since then. These projects are planned and brought to life by our members.

We’ve helped fund projects covering everything from education and policy-making, from teaching technical skills to at-risk young people, to helping local engineers deploy leading technology.

Examples of successful projects include:

  • Helping our Uganda Chapter promote child online safety
  • Supporting research, such as the CoMIQuaL, the Collaborative Measurement of Internet Quality in Lebanon with our Lebanon Chapter
  • Helping to increase internet access for visually impaired people by supporting our Armenian Chapter in creating an Internet Availability Center for the Cultural Center of the Armenian Society of Blind and Visually Impaired People
  • Supporting our Ghana Chapter in providing training in Internet Governance and Standards
