Abandon Normal Devices | Festival of new cinema, digital culture & art | 03 – 05 Oct 2013, Liverpool
An allegory for wider social and political turmoil in Europe, From yu to me focuses on the story of the top-level Internet domain for Yugoslavia, .yu, and the two female scientists – Borka Jerman Blažič and Mirjana Tasić – who administered it.
First registered in 1989, the domain was only abolished in 2010 – long after Yugoslavia’s dissolution. It is now archived in the Museum of Yugoslav History, making it their first virtual artifact.
This short film is a meditation on technology and digital content, presented against the backdrop of socialism’s collapse in Eastern Europe and the rise in popularity of the Internet.
The screening will be followed by a talk by artist and From yu to me director Aleksandra Domanović with scientists Borka Jerman Blažič and Mirjana Tasić.
Commissioned by Abandon Normal Devices, Fridericianum and Rhizome.
About Aleksandra Domanović:
Born in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, in 1981, Domanović currently lives and works in Berlin.
She is concerned with the circulation and reception of images and information, particularly as they shift meaning and change register, traversing different contexts and historical circumstances.
Her works create strange taxonomies and manic associative chains that poke and prod at copyright laws, unpack the geopolitical implications of web domains, or explore – as in the co-creation of the collaborative exhibition platform vvork.com – the model of exhibitions.
In the last few years Domanović has turned her attention to the complex ways in which image culture and information flows have formed the postwar environment of former Yugoslavia.
Her recent solo and group exhibitions include The Future Was at Her Fingertips (Tanya Leighton Berlin, 2013), Meanwhile, Suddenly and Then (12th Biennale de Lyon, 2013), A Different Kind of Order (ICP Triennial, New York, 2013), Turbo Sculpture (Space, London, 2012), Higher Atlas (Marrakech Biennale 4th Edition, 2012) and From yu to me (Kunsthalle Basel, 2012).
